generator-for-sale Portable Generator We Dont Have What You Dont Need

I received this generator in a week or so after ordering from Amazon. Unlike some others, I did not have any issues with the physical integrity of the unit. I did of course have worries about the quality control issues after reading many of the reviews. Assembly was very quick and it fired up after about 10 pulls. I have not run it for more than 20 minutes at a time yet, but I connected a couple of loads to it and everything worked as advertised. I will give it 5 starts once I know it is dependable. Maybe I am just lucky that it came in one piece and worked out of the box.

Buying a used portable generator is getting more popular these days. The obvious reason is the lower costs. Let's learn more about used portable generators.

Now there are many sources where you can buy a used portable generator. The Internet is definitely one of the best places to start looking. A great way to find and grab the best deals is be scanning through customer reviews or ratings and comparing prices. Remember that quality is just as important as the cheap price.

Beware of used portable generators with ridiculously low prices. Because we're talking about used equipment here, we need to check the quality twice, or more. For instance, we all know that running a car in the garage can pose a risk. The same risk applies to running used portable generators. And there are quite a few hazards involved when operating any type of generator, whether used or new.

First of all, there should be information supplied along with a used portable generator. You should always request for a manual or at least some tips on how to operate and maintain the product. The more informed you are, the safer. Portable Generator

If you can, tell the dealer or retailer how you're going to use the portable generator. Are you going to simply use it for the household in case of a power failure? There are many other reasons why you might want a portable generator. For instance, you might want to use one for camping, marine applications or industrial applications. It is important to relay this kind of information so the seller has an idea whether a product is suitable for your needs or not. Otherwise, do some research on your own just to be sure.

Similarly, ask yourself how many hours you might need a used portable generator to run. You may want to jot down the number of hours in a day, week or month when necessary. This might be a good idea if you have frequent outages during a particular period of the year (i.e. blizzards, thunderstorms, etc.).

Of course, consider other factors such as voltage, frequency and phases. Furthermore, consider the required output in watts and load power factor. Also don't forget to ask about special protection against fungus accumulation, corrosion and salty atmospheres. These factors may depend on whether you live in a tropical, industrial or coastal environment. Test vibration, noise and fuel capacity/consumption as well.

The steps to operating used portable generators are simple. As mentioned earlier you must follow all instructions, and if you don't have one try to obtain a manual online or from the manufacturer. Maintain appropriate ventilation to deal with carbon monoxide emissions. Portable generators, especially used ones, should be placed in a secure location, preferably where it isn't wet. Operating a generator with your hands wet can result in electric shock. Furthermore, make sure you use the correct extension cord. Handle fuel with care by turning off the generator while refueling. And finally, protect your home appliances by turning them off before running the generator.

There are many advantages to buying a used portable generator online. You can easily view pictures, details and various brands of used portable generators with a few clicks of a button. Just make sure you're able to communicate properly with the seller and to inspect the product carefully before buying.

This generator is super quiet and the engine runs really smoothly. It instantly changes it’s operating speed just as fast as I can move the speed switch on a 1850 watt hair dryer I used to test it. It doesn’t include oil and the angle of the oil fill hole is nearly horizontal, making it a little difficult to fill even with a funnel, but they did put a nice little drip tray right below the opening so it doesn’t go everywhere. The gas gauge is really nice. Made in Japan. Their competitor (Honda) has some nice videos on their website demonstrating the sound level of actual generators running and the equivalent size Honda generator is very close in noise level to this one. Yamaha should do the same but until then, check out the Honda website.

Yamaha says this is CARB compliant on their website so I’m not sure why Amazon says it isn’t. The label on the generator says it is a 3 on the 10 point California emission scale. Yamaha simply isn’t making a big deal of it like some others do I suppose. This is a new model as of summer 2009. The starter cord is really easy to pull – unlike any other engine I’ve ever started by hand.

I have had this for about a month. This is a very high quality unit, nicely designed. I chose it over the Honda Eu2000i because it has a fuel gage and is a hair lighter (2 pounds), and liked the styling better. Specs are so close it’s a tie… the Yamaha unit specs a bit quieter in “eco” throttle but the Honda specs a bit quieter at full power. Prior to this purchase I had bought a Honeywell inverter generator (a much less expensive Chinese-made knock-off) from Costco which I returned, because I was unimpressed with the Honeywell unit’s quality and noise level. While the price difference is major, you get what you pay for in this case. Anyone looking at the cheaper knock-offs should really consider that a 5db increase in noise level is about twice as loud, the way humans perceive it.

The most impressive thing about this unit is how quiet it is. Even at full engine speed you can stand about 6 feet away and have a normal conversation without raising your voice, or talk on a cell phone without undue distraction. It features an “eco” setting which tapers down the engine throttle and noise when full load isn’t required. At half-throttle or less, from about 6 feet away it is about half as loud and amazingly quiet. I used it to run a 50-amp 12v battery charger and at full charge level the charger only required the generator to operate at about half-speed, and when the charger tapered down the charge level to under 30-amps the generator became so quiet I literally forgot about it. It is MUCH quieter than my boat’s inboard diesel engine, and more efficient than running the main engine just to top off the batteries. I also used it to power a heavy duty 120v grinder and it had no problems supplying the needed power, even on electric motor start-up.

I got this mainly for charging our boat’s batteries at anchor but I also wanted the ability to run power tools. The lighter 1000-watt inverter generators could easily handle the charging application but not the more power-hungry tools. Having the extra power also means the eco-throttle will likely kick in earlier and the unit will operate quieter. The number-1 purchase criteria was “quiet” because I don’t want to be distracted by incessant noise or be a bad neighbor in anchorages. The Honeywell was not quiet enough in my opinion.

An appeal to other boaters and to campers: Please don’t settle for “cheap”. Get a better quality inverter-generator unit that’s quieter so you minimize noise pollution in get-away places. (Leave your “contractors generator” at home!!!) Also, please be considerate of neighbors and limit running it to times/places you aren’t as likely to disturb others… and don’t leave your boat or campsite while it runs and runs. We all like our electric conveniences, but if you really need 120v power more or less constantly; you should stay home or get a dock/parking space where you can plug into “the grid”. It’s rude to disturb others who are trying to get away to find some peace and quiet. If generators are abused it will lead to regulations banning them.

Negative: The unit ships without engine oil, so you need to buy a quart of standard 4-stroke engine oil and fill it. You will also need a funnel, and a pan to catch excess oil. There is no dipstick; you need to fill to the level of the bottom of the filler hole until any more runs out. It uses less than 3/4 quart. I think they should have included the required amount of oil, and a plastic filler container with a spout, marked to show the proper amount of oil to use.

Yes shipping was fast but it does not run. Now I have to travel, take time out, find a repair place to correct the problem. Why would they ship defected products and put the burden on the consumer to fix their mistakes. Should have stayed loyal to Honda.

Fairbanks July 28, 2010 at 12:40 am

Rated 4 out of 5 because does not include cable for DC charging, that seems to me real cheap, having to go and purchase a cable to charge batteries when is setup for it.
Actually the more I think about the angrier I get.
Otherwise Amazon met their end of the deal, prompt shipment, no problems.
Overall is a nice looking unit, started right away and powered my 600 watts microwave oven that installed in my boat without significant drop on motor activity.Plan to have it aboard when cruising to power the oven as well as a backup for the start battery (yes, will have to buy the cord).
Weight is reasonable and does not tax my back, the size is about perfect as it fits right on a cockpit locker.
Will have prefer a Honda but the difference in price is quite significant, as for durability time will tell.

The honeywell generator, HW1000i is a great generator for the price. It does everything that is promises. However, within the first month of ownership, I have had a few things go wrong that were easy fixes assuming the owner has a basic grasp on small engine maintenance. I use my genny to charge my deep cycle batteries on my 35 foot sailboat. I have a 20 amp xantrex battery charger, which I power normally with the generator through a typical shore power cable and outlet, (30 amp shore cable with 15 amp pigtail adapter). The generator spends most of its time semi-covered and in the sunshine in san diego. Within a month of owner ship, I have replaced the inline fuel filter as a result of condensation in the half full fuel tank causing a kinda scary rust on the surface of the inside of the tank. This caused a blockage in the highspeed jet fixed inside the carb. This is a fairly simple task assuming you have lived on a boat and are familiar with cleaning carbs on outboard motors for tenders. This was a task that was fairly easy considering the carb is within easy access once you remove the maintenance panel and the air filter unit. The panel cover comes off with one screw, the same for the air filter cover and then there are 2 maybe 8-10 mil bolts holding the carb to the engine. The bowl for the carb is also easy removal as it has one centrally located bolt through the bottom of the fuel accumulation bowl. (the carb cleaning in a honda ex700, a very similar genny,(my previous) was not quite this easy.) I also removed almost the entire outer casing and removed the fuel tank to clean it out with mineral spirits to clean up some of the rust spots.
Once the tank was cleaned and re-installed, The carb cleaned, and a new inline fuel filter installed, the engine runs perfectly. I have made a few other improvements including an engine hour meter, which helps me keep track of engine usage and maintenance tasks.
In terms of noise, the genny has a signifigant noise increase without the eco-throttle, compared to my previous slighty smaller honda, however it quiets up nicely and is what can be expected for the price.
I would recommend this generator to anyone in the market for other similar products but buyer beware-In calling around to repair shops for parts, the service center in san diego had stopped servicing these units due to lack of availability of parts and reliability. If you are not a do it yourselfer, you could be in a pinch when it comes time to service, or to get it running after a problem.
I , however, am totally happy for the price!

Overall this is a nice little generator but the main purpose of this review is to let people know that this generator DOES NOT HAVE A DC OUTPUT. In reality it does have a DC output but you’re not supposed to use it. The DC output is unregulated which did not pass certain licensing so rather than remove the DC outlet Honeywell decided not to ship or sell a plug that will fit the DC outlet. I think this is a very unprofessional solution and they should do a better job of telling customers what happened. I wasted several hours and trips to multiple hardware stores trying to find a plug for this thing.

I’ve used the generator for about 5 hours now and the thing I notice most is that this is the easiest starting generator that I have ever used. It starts on the first pull every time and has been very reliable. It is a gasoline engine so it is fairly loud but compared to my 5500 Watt portable generator this thing is incredibly quiet.

Algermissen July 29, 2010 at 12:14 pm

Good generator for the money, but carefully count the load and starting amps. It has good Money/Watts ratio. Not for extencive use (see other review from oct 17 2009). Emergencies such 1-2 days once or twice in a year. Quiet and simple. Buy a funnel with extention, since oil hole is under the control panel. I bought it to power my 1hp water pump in a basement. Tested, pump started and ran smoothly, unit hasn’t notice the load. That’s all I need. I could even sell extra electricity to others :) ))

I have only used the GP3250 once in the 3 months since we bought it as a backup power source for temporary power outages. But that one time alone confirmed my hunch that this unit would be a great low-cost solution for increasingly frequent temporary power outages. Last winter, we probably lost power due to storms at least 3 or 4 times, each time lasting about 2 to 6 hours. I concluded we could do much better than candles and always hoping the power company would do the repairs before our frozen food was ruined. After receiving our GP3250 and preparing it for service, it only took 2 weeks before an unexpected power outage occurred that even forced 2 local school districts to close. I immediately tried starting it, and nothing. Then I opened the fuel value, and after one pull, it ran without a hitch for 4 hours. I alternated 1 power cord between 2 freezers, and another between our satellite TV and computer systems; and most important, I made a pot of coffee from our Mr. Coffee. The unit grunted a little when I made the coffee but worked great, easily powering all those units. With woodstoves for heating air and water, and a few 5-gallon buckets of water for flushing toilets, we now have everything we need to weather the normal outages for under $500.

I received our unit from the shipper with an obvious oil leak through the packing material. I opened it to find the bottle of oil leaking, the choke lever broken off and some other minor dents. I immediately contacted Amazon, and within 10 minutes, they made all the arrangements to pick up the damaged unit and send a replacement unit in one trip by another carrier. Yes I would have preferred the first unit arrived in perfect condition, but I have no complaints after the great job by Amazon making it right.

Ibsen July 30, 2010 at 12:34 pm

The generator arrived with a split quart oil bottle. Oil was everywhere. I called the company and they did not acknowledge the problem nor did they replace the oil.
The Generac 5724 is not equiped to handle a twist lock receptacle or a Portable Generator Power Transfer Kit. This makes the generator useless for my need.
Granted it was my ignorance and not knowing what to look for beyond superlatives in the CU report I read when buying a generator which created the problem.
Neither the company nor Amazon are willing to upgrade my new, unused generator for a model which I would be happy to pay the difference for the upgrade.

Harper July 31, 2010 at 12:16 am

I purchased this unit due to maneuverability, ease of starting, low oil shutoff, and published run time of 12.5hours. Additionally, I like the idea that I was purchasing something “made in the USA.”

While most of Generac’s units are made in the USA, the smaller units use “generic OHV” engines which they “outsource” which translates to China! Further investigation, after purchase, I discovered that these engines have a plastic camshaft which does not bode well for longevity.

The literature on this indicates 20Amp receptacles, yes they are, however, the breakers which feed them are 13.5A!! e.g. I have a large “side by side” frig/freezer which I will power during outages, it has a startup current of 14.2Amps, then a steady state of 1.2Amps. The GP3250 is able to start it as it has a “surge” capacity which allows the breakers to handle 15.6Amps for a short duration. I had to research and discover ths for myself as Generac tech support was seemingly unaware that their units have a “surge” capacity beyond the stated breaker capacity.

My complaint is that the literature is very misleading. Calling Generac is a waste of time as all they will do is state whatever the manual does-period. Beyond that, “please return the unit to the place of purchase and buy a bigger one.” I purchased this from Amazon and it came by truck. To return it, I’d have to repack and arrange truck pickup and pay freight-would they help me with this as their literature led me to purchase a generator which was potentially too small? “ABSOLOUTELY NOT!”

If you’re shopping for a generator, do a realistic assessment of the loads you plan on powering so a realistic evaluation can be made.

Realistically I suppose this is a fair value for the $$$. It is easy starting, very quiet, and runs a long time on a tank (4 Gal.) of gas. Longevity of a chinese built engine with a plastic camshaft is of concern. The “cadillac” of portable generators is the Honda. However, they are designed and built to run 24/7 for extended periods and cost 4-6 times as much. My needs for this unit are for emergency power for a duration of 4-7 days every year and a half or so, based on history. Spending $3,000 for something to sit in the barn for years at a time didn’t seem a prudent use of $$. Guess, “you pays your money and takes your chances.” as the old cliche goes.

In conclusion, the literature is misleading, not all generac’s are made in the USA, and I found myself educating their tech support on how the machine actually worked.

I considered titling this review “The Toyota of Generators.”

It arrived promptly in good apparent condition with all parts and even a cute little set of tools. I read the assembly instructions and immediately deviated from them by inverting the carton so that the generator emerged lying on its back (on the Styrofoam packing). This allowed me to attach the wheels and bumpers far more easily, leaving only the folding handle to attach after I righted the unit.

I added oil and gas, flipped the petcock to ON and closed the choke. It started immediately and purred away contentedly after the choke was opened.

So, why “Toyota?” After a few minutes I reached for the switch to shut it off. To my surprise, the switch was already in the OFF position. Turning it on and off had no effect on the engine. Shutting off the fuel flow did finally stop it. A cursory inspection revealed but a single wire (yellow/green) connected to the switch. The wiring diagram shows both a yellow/green and a yellow wire connected here. Further investigation showed that the actual wiring color scheme was quite different from the diagram in the manual.

The next logical step is a call to ETQ.

Great Generator. Fired Right Up out of the Box. Even comes with adapter to use 30amp RV Plug. Pretty Quite. Nice Muffler.

Was Damaged in shipping just like everyone else says. Took over a month to arrive. only 2 days with FEDEX Amazon took 3.5 weeks to package and ship. Not sure about that???

BUT!!!!!!!

Could not even run air on my RV. This thing should easily handle 30 amps but it is Circuit Brteakered at 13.5amps. Pull more than that off it and you pop the breaker. Whats the use of 3200 -4000 watts if it is breakered at 1500watts???????? I just uped the breaker.

Bought this generator last dec for camping, started and ran for 2 minutes and then put away, when i tried it again all it would do is miss, and blow white smoke, i called eastern tool twice and was put on hold for about 10 minutes each time with no one coming back to me, when i drained the oil from the crankcase it was full of gas, terrible generator, save your money

Devis August 2, 2010 at 12:11 am

The generator was delivered on the date expected, there was no damage with the exception of a slight dent to a support bar underneath the engine. As noted in previous posts, you will need a long neck oil funnel. After adding oil and gas it started on one pull, it ran smooth and the noise level is less than a lawn mower. My plan is to change the oil after 5 hours and again after 10 hours. The machine looks and works great, time will tell. A volt and hour meter would be nice additions….a great unit for the price.
