This is a very neat little unit. I needed some backup to run a sump pump in case of power failure during a deluge. Deluges have been pretty common lately, and this machine has given some peace of mind as the alternative is a lot of ruined carpet. Basically, the unit is as advertised. It arrived well-packaged and assembled, but without oil. After oiling and gassing it started on the second pull, ran smoothly, and put out the juice. The continuous power rating is 1400 watts with a maximum load of 2000 watts so 1400 hundred is the figure you should use for continuous service. This is the way all generator units are advertised, using the maximum load figure. This size will easily run my sump pump and maybe the freezer and/or refrigerator. The gas tank is a good size and the power panel is straightforward and easy to use. And it weighs less than 60 lbs. so it is not too difficult to get it where you want it. Must say I haven’t had a threatening power outage since I got it, and maybe never will, but I also like electric string trimmers, chain saws, and leaf blowers. Come fall I will put The unit on a wagon and then can take it anywhere on my wooded lot to run these appliances. If having a few extra electrons would make your life better, this model might fill the bill. So far I like it a lot.
Are you planning to purchase a portable diesel generator? First, ask yourself what is it for you? What is the difference when you used diesel instead of propane gas?
Why the majority chooses gas generators than diesel powered one? These are the possible questions you should ask. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this machine?
Fuel efficiency. When you use diesel, you can save more fuel compared when using propane gas. Only half of their fuel load is being used when functioning the same capacity as other type of generator.
That is why it is ideal in providing enough power. So this engine can power up high-consumption equipments such as refrigerators, computer and any other home medical equipment.
Much stronger than gas. By experience, diesel engine generator runs for 2000 hours or more before you encounter a major maintenance work.
Those who have used it saw some proof that diesel engine Portable Gas Generator has a power of endurance than any other unit that run on other gas engine. For example, heavy-duty vehicle last longer than any other types of vehicles such as AUV, since they run on diesel.
You can easily give solution to ordinary maintenance trouble. The reason is that there is no spark plug to maintain. You only need to have maintenance when it comes to changing of oil and cleaning of the unit, as given on the user manual of the equipment.
It is perfect for a bumpy lands and rugged work. These generators are more consistent in a hardy location than of its counterparts. This machine is ideal for construction works and outdoor activities.
There is a plenty of fuel sources with this generator. Diesel supply is almost available anywhere. As long as gas station is around, you can easily find diesel supply.
In most cases diesel can be in safety use. It is less flammable than other petroleum sources.
It does not have spark plug, which lessen the possibility of freak combustion. So you will have no doubt that your properties have an instant protection from your generator as well as the unit.
On the other side, this machine has some features and characteristics you do not prefer. Let me show you some of these:
- It is a little bit expensive compared to other types of generators. But you can save more in terms of maintenance and fuel since this power source can last longer.
- Old model diesel generator causes a bit of noise. Big disadvantage if you reside in a well populated area.
- It also has parts and tanks which are heavy and large in nature. You must consider your place because the equipment may not be appropriate and may look like a standby unit.
Purchasing a portable diesel generator may have features you do not want. Just take a look at equal sides before acquiring this type of equipment.

I pulled this baby out of the box and installed the wheels, collapsable handle and the footbrace. Then I poured in the oil, topped off the fuel tank, choked it a bit and the first pull she started right up. I gave my wife a quick lesson in the operation then let her start it up…no problem. I hooked up a few high amperage items like my compressor, deep freeze and a hair drier. I would reccomend this generator. Even if I have to use it just one time in the next 5 years, I feel as though it is money well spent.
I bought this to keep around the house in case the power goes out. Like in a thunderstorm when I really need my sump pump. I also think I can use this to run my travel trailer. One thing to note is although this has ECO-THROTTLE it only throttles back when there is NO LOAD not LOW LOAD. At idle it is only going to put out about 35-45Hz and 80-90VAC instead of 60Hz/120VAC. It has a circuit to detect load and when it senses it it immediately jumps to full speed. I did not measure how much time it takes to go from idle to full speed when it detects a load but it seemed pretty quick considering the throttle/governor system is mechanical.
Even though I have not put it through it paces yet, the generator is well built. The battery was not hard to find when you have the right number. The type # in the instruction book is no good. I called Eastern Tools for the number at 888-908-6200. Availiable at Wal-Mart, number is ES12N94B1 for $30.00.
We ordered this generator on 4/1/2010. Per Amazon, the shipping date was 4/6/2010. However, they shipped it a day early. Using the shipper’s tracking system ((AFB Freight System), we saw that the delivery date was 4/8/2010. Contacted the shipper and made arrangements for delivery on 4/9/2010.
Unpacked the generator and found NO scratches, dings, or dents. Assembled the wheel kit (easy). Based on other reviews, rotated the position of the pull start to make it easier access (a quarter of a turn to the LEFT). Very easy pull start. Not sure we will purchase a battery since the pull start is so easy. LOVE the automatic throttle feature as the generator is relatively quiet when it IS NOT running “wide open”.
Our first option to use this generator will be the Talladega spring NASCAR race in a couple of weeks. We have a 27′ travel trailer that we will be powering with this generator. We should have more than enough watts to run everything we need to run in the trailer at the same time.
This generator is super quiet and the engine runs really smoothly. It instantly changes it’s operating speed just as fast as I can move the speed switch on a 1850 watt hair dryer I used to test it. It doesn’t include oil and the angle of the oil fill hole is nearly horizontal, making it a little difficult to fill even with a funnel, but they did put a nice little drip tray right below the opening so it doesn’t go everywhere. The gas gauge is really nice. Made in Japan. Their competitor (Honda) has some nice videos on their website demonstrating the sound level of actual generators running and the equivalent size Honda generator is very close in noise level to this one. Yamaha should do the same but until then, check out the Honda website.
Yamaha says this is CARB compliant on their website so I’m not sure why Amazon says it isn’t. The label on the generator says it is a 3 on the 10 point California emission scale. Yamaha simply isn’t making a big deal of it like some others do I suppose. This is a new model as of summer 2009. The starter cord is really easy to pull – unlike any other engine I’ve ever started by hand.
I have had this for about a month. This is a very high quality unit, nicely designed. I chose it over the Honda Eu2000i because it has a fuel gage and is a hair lighter (2 pounds), and liked the styling better. Specs are so close it’s a tie… the Yamaha unit specs a bit quieter in “eco” throttle but the Honda specs a bit quieter at full power. Prior to this purchase I had bought a Honeywell inverter generator (a much less expensive Chinese-made knock-off) from Costco which I returned, because I was unimpressed with the Honeywell unit’s quality and noise level. While the price difference is major, you get what you pay for in this case. Anyone looking at the cheaper knock-offs should really consider that a 5db increase in noise level is about twice as loud, the way humans perceive it.
The most impressive thing about this unit is how quiet it is. Even at full engine speed you can stand about 6 feet away and have a normal conversation without raising your voice, or talk on a cell phone without undue distraction. It features an “eco” setting which tapers down the engine throttle and noise when full load isn’t required. At half-throttle or less, from about 6 feet away it is about half as loud and amazingly quiet. I used it to run a 50-amp 12v battery charger and at full charge level the charger only required the generator to operate at about half-speed, and when the charger tapered down the charge level to under 30-amps the generator became so quiet I literally forgot about it. It is MUCH quieter than my boat’s inboard diesel engine, and more efficient than running the main engine just to top off the batteries. I also used it to power a heavy duty 120v grinder and it had no problems supplying the needed power, even on electric motor start-up.
I got this mainly for charging our boat’s batteries at anchor but I also wanted the ability to run power tools. The lighter 1000-watt inverter generators could easily handle the charging application but not the more power-hungry tools. Having the extra power also means the eco-throttle will likely kick in earlier and the unit will operate quieter. The number-1 purchase criteria was “quiet” because I don’t want to be distracted by incessant noise or be a bad neighbor in anchorages. The Honeywell was not quiet enough in my opinion.
An appeal to other boaters and to campers: Please don’t settle for “cheap”. Get a better quality inverter-generator unit that’s quieter so you minimize noise pollution in get-away places. (Leave your “contractors generator” at home!!!) Also, please be considerate of neighbors and limit running it to times/places you aren’t as likely to disturb others… and don’t leave your boat or campsite while it runs and runs. We all like our electric conveniences, but if you really need 120v power more or less constantly; you should stay home or get a dock/parking space where you can plug into “the grid”. It’s rude to disturb others who are trying to get away to find some peace and quiet. If generators are abused it will lead to regulations banning them.
Negative: The unit ships without engine oil, so you need to buy a quart of standard 4-stroke engine oil and fill it. You will also need a funnel, and a pan to catch excess oil. There is no dipstick; you need to fill to the level of the bottom of the filler hole until any more runs out. It uses less than 3/4 quart. I think they should have included the required amount of oil, and a plastic filler container with a spout, marked to show the proper amount of oil to use.
Great Generator. Fired Right Up out of the Box. Even comes with adapter to use 30amp RV Plug. Pretty Quite. Nice Muffler.
Was Damaged in shipping just like everyone else says. Took over a month to arrive. only 2 days with FEDEX Amazon took 3.5 weeks to package and ship. Not sure about that???
BUT!!!!!!!
Could not even run air on my RV. This thing should easily handle 30 amps but it is Circuit Brteakered at 13.5amps. Pull more than that off it and you pop the breaker. Whats the use of 3200 -4000 watts if it is breakered at 1500watts???????? I just uped the breaker.
I considered titling this review “The Toyota of Generators.”
It arrived promptly in good apparent condition with all parts and even a cute little set of tools. I read the assembly instructions and immediately deviated from them by inverting the carton so that the generator emerged lying on its back (on the Styrofoam packing). This allowed me to attach the wheels and bumpers far more easily, leaving only the folding handle to attach after I righted the unit.
I added oil and gas, flipped the petcock to ON and closed the choke. It started immediately and purred away contentedly after the choke was opened.
So, why “Toyota?” After a few minutes I reached for the switch to shut it off. To my surprise, the switch was already in the OFF position. Turning it on and off had no effect on the engine. Shutting off the fuel flow did finally stop it. A cursory inspection revealed but a single wire (yellow/green) connected to the switch. The wiring diagram shows both a yellow/green and a yellow wire connected here. Further investigation showed that the actual wiring color scheme was quite different from the diagram in the manual.
The next logical step is a call to ETQ.
The generator was delivered on the date expected, there was no damage with the exception of a slight dent to a support bar underneath the engine. As noted in previous posts, you will need a long neck oil funnel. After adding oil and gas it started on one pull, it ran smooth and the noise level is less than a lawn mower. My plan is to change the oil after 5 hours and again after 10 hours. The machine looks and works great, time will tell. A volt and hour meter would be nice additions….a great unit for the price.
Bought this generator last dec for camping, started and ran for 2 minutes and then put away, when i tried it again all it would do is miss, and blow white smoke, i called eastern tool twice and was put on hold for about 10 minutes each time with no one coming back to me, when i drained the oil from the crankcase it was full of gas, terrible generator, save your money
Yes shipping was fast but it does not run. Now I have to travel, take time out, find a repair place to correct the problem. Why would they ship defected products and put the burden on the consumer to fix their mistakes. Should have stayed loyal to Honda.
Rated 4 out of 5 because does not include cable for DC charging, that seems to me real cheap, having to go and purchase a cable to charge batteries when is setup for it.
Actually the more I think about the angrier I get.
Otherwise Amazon met their end of the deal, prompt shipment, no problems.
Overall is a nice looking unit, started right away and powered my 600 watts microwave oven that installed in my boat without significant drop on motor activity.Plan to have it aboard when cruising to power the oven as well as a backup for the start battery (yes, will have to buy the cord).
Weight is reasonable and does not tax my back, the size is about perfect as it fits right on a cockpit locker.
Will have prefer a Honda but the difference in price is quite significant, as for durability time will tell.
The honeywell generator, HW1000i is a great generator for the price. It does everything that is promises. However, within the first month of ownership, I have had a few things go wrong that were easy fixes assuming the owner has a basic grasp on small engine maintenance. I use my genny to charge my deep cycle batteries on my 35 foot sailboat. I have a 20 amp xantrex battery charger, which I power normally with the generator through a typical shore power cable and outlet, (30 amp shore cable with 15 amp pigtail adapter). The generator spends most of its time semi-covered and in the sunshine in san diego. Within a month of owner ship, I have replaced the inline fuel filter as a result of condensation in the half full fuel tank causing a kinda scary rust on the surface of the inside of the tank. This caused a blockage in the highspeed jet fixed inside the carb. This is a fairly simple task assuming you have lived on a boat and are familiar with cleaning carbs on outboard motors for tenders. This was a task that was fairly easy considering the carb is within easy access once you remove the maintenance panel and the air filter unit. The panel cover comes off with one screw, the same for the air filter cover and then there are 2 maybe 8-10 mil bolts holding the carb to the engine. The bowl for the carb is also easy removal as it has one centrally located bolt through the bottom of the fuel accumulation bowl. (the carb cleaning in a honda ex700, a very similar genny,(my previous) was not quite this easy.) I also removed almost the entire outer casing and removed the fuel tank to clean it out with mineral spirits to clean up some of the rust spots.
Once the tank was cleaned and re-installed, The carb cleaned, and a new inline fuel filter installed, the engine runs perfectly. I have made a few other improvements including an engine hour meter, which helps me keep track of engine usage and maintenance tasks.
In terms of noise, the genny has a signifigant noise increase without the eco-throttle, compared to my previous slighty smaller honda, however it quiets up nicely and is what can be expected for the price.
I would recommend this generator to anyone in the market for other similar products but buyer beware-In calling around to repair shops for parts, the service center in san diego had stopped servicing these units due to lack of availability of parts and reliability. If you are not a do it yourselfer, you could be in a pinch when it comes time to service, or to get it running after a problem.
I , however, am totally happy for the price!
